Peacock Park

A huge part of what Miami is today is its rich history. December, aside from Arts and Culture with the Art Basel week, is Miami’s Heritage Month a time to explore and learn the different history of Miami’s different parks and places.

One of the historic parks in Miami is the Peacock Park at 2820 McFarlane Road in Coconut Grove. This park by the bay that is open to public is in honor of Charles and Isabella Peacock. They’re the couple who built the first hotel in Miami in 1883– the Bay View House. This small hotel became the gathering place for nascent Coconut Grove community which includes the yacht designer Ralph Munroe whose home, The Barnacle, is now a state historic site and 5 acre park as well.

The first settlers here are from Bahamas who came via Key West to work at the hotel which was later named as the Peacock Inn. They’re the first black community on the South Florida mainland in 1870s. It was their first-hand experience with tropical plants, agriculture and building materials that proved invaluable to the development of Coconut Grove.

The park is located by the bay. You get to enjoy the view and the relaxing bay breeze while you come here for a walk, jog or just hang out with family and friends. The park has a baseball field, basketball court, tennis court, playground and skate park.

The park is also accessible as it’s just a walking distance from the bars, shops and restaurants of the area. Right next door, you’ll find the Coconut Grove Sailing Club.
