Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

3251 S Miami Ave, Miami, FL 33129

An art collector and agricultural industrialist, James Deering, built and completed the entire Villa Vizcaya during the early 1916 to 1920. Though the mansion was his estate and his Florida home back then, it was so named as Vizcaya after an explorer and industrialist, Vizcaino.

As an art collector, Deering acquired artifacts from Europe. He also commissioned sculptures, murals and architectural elements from US-based contemporary artists to make this property an extraordinary European-inspired estate that’s modeled from centuries’-old Italian country villa. The whole estate is 50 acres that sits the Main House, a 10-acre garden, native forest and a historic village.

The Museum consists of the Main House which has 34 grand rooms displaying over 2,500 art objects and furnishings. The 10-acre garden is also European-inspired formal gardens on Biscayne Bay. The garden grows a significant orchid collection totaling 2,000 specimens and 25 acres of endangered primary growth forests. While the historic village originally was the area for horticulture during Deering’s times. Now, the village was revitalized and currently houses the Miami Science Building.

This National Historical Landmark offers tours and exhibits for the art, history and nature-lovers. Audio tours can also be purchased in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Haitian Creole.

The estate also now has Vizcaya Cafe and Shop for those who wants to grab a bite before or after the tours. See the stunning Biscayne Bay view, explore the grand collection of arts and learn its history. They’re open daily from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., except Tuesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The place is now available for rental to host any event too.
